१० — सुभाषितानि (pp. 411-16)
- HW 1:
- Listen to Deshpande’s reading of the assigned सुभाषित-s and practice reading with him, following his model pronunciation. His reading will naturally break up the verses into their 4 quarters (पाद-s). Note the quarter breaks and translate the verse in four lines, one for each quarter. (The point of such translation is to allow you to see how Sanskrit syntax often construes with the meter, so reading with the meter will help you to understand the Sanskrit.) Translate the first 4 verses in the submission box below.

- For उपानह्, see Lesson 44
- the -तस् suffix in दूरतस् has an ablative sense: दूरतः “from afar, from a distance”
- for परिहर्तव्य, see Lesson 35
- मध्ये “in the middle” = “between”
- word reduplication in Sanskrit has a distributive sense, so पदे पदे = “at every step”
