Lesson 1 Homework
- HW 1:
- Read Deshpande’s excellent introduction (“Sanskrit Language,” pp. viii-xxiii).
- Watch the introductory video on the “1 Phonology” page. Complete the video quiz.
- Be sure that you understand what is meant by the following terms: place of articulation, voiced and unvoiced sounds, aspirated and unaspirated sounds, sandhi.
- HW 2
- On the Vowels and Semivowels subpage:
- Listen to Deshpande's pronunciation of the alphabet and practice along with him at least a few times through.
- Watch the video and thoroughly familiarize yourself with the table. Click on its sounds to hear them, and feel where they are articulated while you're pronouncing them. Complete its short video quiz.
- Thoroughly familiarize yourself with the places of articulation and the differences between short and long vowels, and simple and complex ones.
- Listen to Deshpande's pronunciation of the alphabet and practice along with him at least a few times through.
- On the Sparśas and Spirants subpage:
- Watch the video and thoroughly familiarize yourself with the table. Click on its sounds to hear them, and feel where they are articulated while you're pronouncing them. Complete its short video quiz.
- Recite the series of contact sounds at each point of articulation many times, paying attention to the place of your tongue throughout. Focus on aspirating and deaspirating appropriately. Using your knowledge of the ordering of sounds from -V → +V and -A → +A, try to recite each series without looking at the grid.
- Watch the video and thoroughly familiarize yourself with the table. Click on its sounds to hear them, and feel where they are articulated while you're pronouncing them. Complete its short video quiz.
